Where is depth of field preview button on nikon d90

Portraits with the subject in focus but a background blur have shallow depth of field. The DOF preview button helps you determine what photos will look like before the image has been taken.

When the button is pressed, the lens will stop down to the aperture that you have set. Then, you will be able to see a preview of what the final image will look like through the viewfinder.

Depending on your camera, the button is usually situated near the lens, where your thumb or forefinger can press it without too much effort. The easiest way to experiment with the button is to be in aperture priority mode. If you are looking through the viewfinder, the scene will darken as you close down the aperture.

OK There are 2 buttons one has name fn and i believe that is function button and i am pressing the other one on the opposite side of the 'fn' button ,but have not noticed any sound. If you hold the camera normally, with your right index finger on the shutter, this DOF button is tucked underneath the lens, where your pinky finger.

Today's most advanced DSLRs come with a dedicated button DoF preview button to preview the Depth of Field and allows you to close down your aperture to the selected value by stopping down the lens's diaphragm. It is a really helpful tool when you are doing Landscape photography, and most importantly if you are using Hyperfocal distance formula. Thanks for the explanation. You can also use DOF preview button to preview the effect of the flash on your subject. You can use this with the built in flash as well as the CLS speed lights. I think the degree of accuracy you get from the depth of field preview through the viewfinder depends on your eyesight.

I've not found the DoF preview to be relevant for me on anything smaller than a 6x6 film camera. You can also use depth of field scales if you need accuracy.
